Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Since its official opening in January 2022, Abrehot Library (አብርሆት ቤተ-መጽሐፍት)has quickly established itself as a beacon of learning, cultural enrichment, and community connection in the heart of Ethiopia’s capital. Strategically located just across from the Ethiopian Parliament Building, the library is more than the largest in the country—it is a national symbol of educational ambition and public service.

A Vision of Enlightenment
Named “Abrehot,” which means “Enlightenment” in Amharic, the library is a modern architectural achievement with a mission to empower current and future generations through access to knowledge. Initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the library was completed at a cost exceeding 1.1 billion birr and designed by ZIAS Design International PLC.
Spanning 19,000 square meters over four stories, the facility features light-filled reading spaces, 1.5 kilometers of bookshelves, and seating capacity for more than 2,000 visitors at a time.
Where Learning Comes to Life
Abrehot is more than just a collection of books—it’s a dynamic, inclusive environment that welcomes readers of all backgrounds. On any given day, students, professionals, and lifelong learners can be seen poring over materials that range from children’s textbooks to international research publications.
The library holds over 300,000 local and 120,000 international academic papers, along with a wide range of English-language books and local literature, much of which has been generously donated by Ethiopian households and global partners such as Book Aid International and Ethiopia Reads.

Thoughtful Design, Inside and Out

What makes Abrehot particularly unique is its integration of indoor and outdoor learning spaces. Highlights include:
- The Knowledge Garden – An open-air reading area shaded by olive and sessa trees, designed for quiet reflection and occasional performances.
- The Knowledge Springs – A designated zone for online learning and digital research.
- The Knowledge Centre – The main library building, housing the book collections, study halls, and specialized reading areas.
The facility also boasts eight bookstores, a children’s reading room, café, meeting rooms, and plenty of desk space with power outlets, making it easy for visitors to stay for hours.
Challenges and Strengths
Despite its many strengths, the library is not without challenges. Internet connectivity remains unreliable in certain parts of the building, and even personal hotspots can struggle. However, backup power ensures uninterrupted study sessions, especially valuable during frequent local power outages.
Visitors continue to commend Abrehot’s thoughtful layout, modern amenities, spacious parking, and tranquil atmosphere. Its design and function position it not only as a library, but as a hub for knowledge creation and social interaction.
A Place That Inspires
One of the most inspiring aspects of Abrehot is the diversity of its users. Children, teenagers, university students, and elderly citizens often sit side by side—an organic representation of intergenerational learning and mutual respect. The open-air reading spaces regularly host groups of excited young readers, their laughter and energy filling the air.
As Ethiopia continues to invest in infrastructure and education, institutions like Abrehot serve as blueprints for how public spaces can uplift communities and fuel national growth.
A Personal Reflection
For many, Abrehot is more than just a place to read—it’s a cornerstone of their academic journey. One visitor shared how the library has supported their studies during a temporary return to Ethiopia:
“This library has been a lifeline during my short stay in Ethiopia. It has allowed me to continue the distance learning program I started while I was in Sweden. Abrehot offers a calm and welcoming environment where I can read, study, and stay focused on my academic work. Whether I’m working on coursework or simply enjoying a good book, it’s a truly inspiring place to be.”
More Than a Building
In its short life, Abrehot Library has already transformed into something far greater than a public institution. It has become a sanctuary for knowledge-seekers, a gathering point for communities, and a living testament to Ethiopia’s bright educational future.
Abrehot is not just a library—it is a light for all who seek to learn, grow, and connect.
