COPENHAGEN, Denmark, September 18, 2024/APO Group/ — In a significant boost to Ethiopia’s healthcare system, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health have signed a $13.5 million agreement, backed by the World Bank, to procure and install advanced oxygen supply systems in hospitals across the country.
This landmark project aims to address critical healthcare needs by providing state-of-the-art oxygen generation and supply equipment, which will be installed in various medical facilities. By doing so, it promises to improve emergency preparedness, enhance the quality of care, and provide significant economic benefits.
The initiative is set to tackle the dual challenge of improving healthcare delivery while reducing the nation’s reliance on imported oxygen. By establishing local oxygen plants, Ethiopia will not only ensure a more reliable and cost-effective supply of this essential resource but also stimulate job creation and skills development within local communities.
UNOPS will take charge of overseeing the procurement, installation, and integration of these oxygen systems. The organization is committed to delivering equipment that meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. According to Ms. Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of the Multi-Country Office of UNOPS and Representative to the African Union, “We are excited to partner with the Ministry of Health on this critical project. The demand for oxygen supply systems has grown, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This partnership ensures that we are not only meeting current needs but are also preparing for future demands in both healthcare and industrial sectors.”
Work on the project will commence immediately, with the goal of completing installations by December 2025. The deployment of these oxygen systems is expected to significantly enhance the capacity and reliability of oxygen delivery in Ethiopia’s healthcare facilities, ensuring consistent and high-quality care for patients nationwide.
This investment represents a crucial step forward in strengthening Ethiopia’s healthcare infrastructure and preparing for future challenges, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to improving health outcomes for its citizens.
