EU Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen’s Visit to Ethiopia Focuses on Strengthening Partnerships and Business Environment

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 16 October 2024

European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, visited Ethiopia on 14 October 2024, engaging in a series of high-level discussions aimed at enhancing ties between the EU and Ethiopia. During her visit, Commissioner Urpilainen met with Ethiopia’s newly elected President, Taye Atske-Selassie, offering her congratulations and discussing key regional and national issues, as well as opportunities for deepening cooperation between the two sides.

A significant topic on the agenda was the ongoing EU-Ethiopia partnership, particularly through the framework of the Global Gateway, the EU’s flagship strategy for boosting global connectivity and sustainable development. The initiative aims to foster partnerships that promote sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, and digital development. Urpilainen expressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia through these avenues, while also encouraging continued dialogue on important matters, including the country’s internal situation and broader regional dynamics.

In addition to her talks with President Taye Atske-Selassie, Commissioner Urpilainen met with members of the European Chamber of Commerce in Ethiopia (EuroCham) and other stakeholders to discuss the country’s business environment. While challenges remain, including regulatory hurdles and economic instability, Urpilainen emphasized Ethiopia’s vast potential for growth and development. She outlined the EU’s dedication to supporting the private sector, highlighting that the Global Gateway strategy aligns with fostering a more conducive environment for investment and economic partnerships.

Urpilainen’s visit underlines the EU’s strategic interest in Ethiopia, a key player in the Horn of Africa, and signals a renewed focus on collaboration to address both current challenges and future opportunities. By encouraging dialogue and enhancing economic ties, the EU hopes to play a pivotal role in supporting Ethiopia’s development and stability.

This visit marks another step in strengthening the longstanding relationship between the European Union and Ethiopia, as both parties continue to work together toward a prosperous and peaceful future.
