Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Network of Ethiopian Women’s Association (NEWA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs and Oxfam International, has released a groundbreaking report titled “Determining the Ethiopian Women’s Status and Priorities.” The study, financed by the European Union (EU), offers a comprehensive look into the current status, needs, and priorities of Ethiopian women, providing a roadmap for informed policies and programs aimed at enhancing women’s empowerment across Ethiopia.
The launch event, attended by prominent officials, researchers, and advocates, underscored the significance of this data-driven approach in shaping future initiatives. Dr. Ergogie Tesfaye, Ethiopia’s Minister of Women and Social Affairs, commended the report, noting its basis in robust, mixed-method research. “This research combined a quantitative survey involving over 36,000 households with qualitative insights from diverse groups of women across various regions,” Dr. Tesfaye explained, highlighting the extensive scope and reliability of the findings.
Ambassador-designate of the EU to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger, praised the study as an instrumental step in fostering a supportive environment for Ethiopian women and girls. She emphasized the EU’s commitment to gender equality, growth, peace, and good governance, noting, “These findings will serve as a foundation to guide our ongoing efforts in Ethiopia, and we call on all stakeholders to play their part in bringing these recommendations to life.”
The report provides a detailed analysis across multiple dimensions essential to women’s well-being, such as education, health, socio-economic conditions, psychological health, political involvement, and justice. Ms. Saba Gebremedihin, Executive Director of NEWA, noted that the study’s insights are key to understanding women’s experiences and challenges across the country. “Our objective has been to provide a broad evidence base that captures Ethiopian women’s status and priorities, from economic needs to political participation,” said Ms. Gebremedihin. She further elaborated that the data would support decision-makers in crafting programs that address the complex needs and aspirations of women across Ethiopia.
Informed by this research, stakeholders are optimistic that the study will drive significant policy shifts and bolster efforts toward gender equity and empowerment in Ethiopia. The study aligns with national and EU values, setting the stage for collaborative efforts to improve the lives of Ethiopian women in the social, economic, and political arenas.
