Germany Commits an Additional €4 Million to Support Peace in Northern Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, 4 September 2024 – The Government of Germany has pledged an additional €4 million to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Peace Support Facility (PSF), aimed at fostering peace in the conflict-ridden regions of Afar, Amhara, and Tigray in Northern Ethiopia. With this new contribution, Germany’s total funding to the PSF has now reached €14.1 million.

Dr. Ferdinand von Weyhe, Acting Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, emphasized the importance of this support, stating: “Germany’s continued support to the Peace Support Facility underscores our commitment to helping Ethiopia heal the wounds of the devastating war in the North. Only dialogue and mutual trust can contribute to overcoming division and conflict.” He added that fostering local governance, the rule of law, basic social services, and economic revival in the affected areas is key to achieving lasting peace in Ethiopia. “Thanks to this programme, the people in many war-affected woredas [districts] in the North will benefit from a tangible peace dividend,” von Weyhe said.

The signing ceremony for this new contribution took place at the Ministry of Finance in Addis Ababa, where Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, H.E. Semereta Sewasew, German Acting Ambassador Dr. von Weyhe, and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Samuel Doe were present. H.E. Semereta Sewasew noted that restoring peace and a liveable environment in the war-torn regions remains a top priority for the Ethiopian government, and Germany’s additional support will be crucial in strengthening ongoing peacebuilding efforts.

The PSF, spearheaded by the UNDP, plays a pivotal role in Ethiopia’s peacebuilding process, operating within the framework of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus. This approach aims to bridge immediate humanitarian needs with long-term development and stability, ensuring a sustainable recovery for the affected regions.

Germany’s significant financial commitment is expected to enhance efforts to support local governance, rule of law, and economic development, directly benefiting communities devastated by the recent conflict. As the international community continues to back Ethiopia’s peace process, the additional funding is a critical step toward rebuilding the livelihoods of millions in the Northern regions.

For the people of Afar, Amhara, and Tigray, the strengthened peace initiative brings hope for a more stable and prosperous future, while highlighting the importance of international partnerships in securing long-term peace and development in Ethiopia.
