His Holiness Abune Sawiros Delivers Inspiring New Year Message to Ethiopians

September 10, 2024 – His Holiness Abune Sawiros, Archbishop of the Sheger City Diocese in Southwest Shwa and Head of Meskaye Hzunan Madhanemalem Monastery, shared a heartfelt New Year message with the faithful of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the nation at large. His message, rooted in Scripture and Ethiopian tradition, called for peace, love, and spiritual renewal as Ethiopians enter the new year.

Drawing from Psalm 65:11, “You crown the year with your goodness,” His Holiness opened his message with a prayer in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He extended greetings to clergy, deacons, scholars, and faithful believers, offering words of hope for the year ahead. In his message, he reflected on the importance of embracing the new year with a renewed spirit of faith, forgiveness, and unity.

Abune Sawiros encouraged Ethiopians to recognize the blessings that God bestows on His creation, from the natural cycles of the earth to the spiritual opportunities for personal growth. He used vivid imagery to describe the transformation that occurs in the world, as barren lands are refreshed by rain, seeds sprout and grow, and the mountains turn green once again. He likened this cycle to human life, urging people to embrace the opportunity to renew their spirits, repent for past sins, and live in love and peace with one another.

Reflecting on the teachings of St. Peter, he reminded the faithful to turn away from sinful ways and live according to God’s laws. Quoting from 1 Peter 4:3, Abune Sawiros called on Ethiopians to leave behind the past era marked by “debauchery, carnal lust, drunkenness, and shameless idolatry” and embrace a future that aligns with Christian values.

The Archbishop expressed concern about the state of humanity, noting that while the earth flourishes with the passage of time, human hearts are often hardened by sin, hatred, and conflict. He warned that ignoring the gift of a new age without seeking spiritual renewal would be a missed opportunity and an affront to God’s grace.

In his call for unity, Abune Sawiros emphasized the need for Ethiopians to let go of old grievances and embrace a mindset that fosters peace and reconciliation. “Accepting a new age in such a life is to underestimate God’s gift,” he said, urging everyone to cast aside the old ways and welcome the new year with a spirit of love and goodwill.

His Holiness closed his message with a prayer for Ethiopia, asking God to bless the land with peace, love, unity, and reconciliation. He expressed his hope that the good deeds done in this world would pave the way for all Ethiopians to inherit the eternal kingdom of God.

“May the era be a time of peace, love, unity, reconciliation, and blessings,” Abune Sawiros declared, wishing all Ethiopians a blessed and joyful new year.

This inspiring message serves as a reminder of the spiritual and moral obligations that accompany the celebration of the new year. As Ethiopians reflect on the past and look forward to the future, Abune Sawiros’ words offer guidance on how to live with purpose and faith in the year ahead.

Happy New Year to all Ethiopians!
