MOGADISHU, Somalia, 16 September 2024 – His Excellency Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is currently on an official visit to Mogadishu for high-level discussions with Somalia’s leadership. The visit highlights IGAD’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace, security, and development in the Horn of Africa, with a special focus on deepening cooperation with the Federal Republic of Somalia, a founding member of the regional bloc.
During his visit, Dr. Workneh met with Somalia’s President, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to discuss key issues related to regional stability and economic cooperation. The discussions centered on IGAD’s current initiatives in Somalia and ways to enhance collaboration in addressing security challenges, promoting economic growth, and ensuring sustainable development.
President Hassan Sheikh expressed Somalia’s strong commitment to working closely with IGAD, emphasizing the nation’s desire to be an active contributor to regional development. “Somalia values its partnership with IGAD, and we look forward to continuing our cooperation for the benefit of our region,” said the President.
One of the key achievements of Dr. Workneh’s visit was the signing of an agreement with Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ahmed Fiqi. The agreement paves the way for even closer collaboration between IGAD and Somalia, including the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence in the Blue Economy. This initiative aims to harness Somalia’s vast maritime resources and boost regional economic growth, marking a significant milestone for both Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.

Dr. Workneh praised Somalia’s recent progress towards peace and state-building, noting the country’s pivotal role in shaping regional security and stability. He emphasized that IGAD remains committed to supporting Somalia as it addresses critical challenges such as countering violent extremism, responding to climate-induced displacement, and promoting inclusive governance.
“Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also a critical partner in our shared mission to promote peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa,” said Dr. Workneh. “We stand with Somalia as it navigates its path towards sustainable peace and prosperity, and we will continue to support the government’s efforts to build a resilient nation.”
The visit also saw Dr. Workneh engage with other Somali leaders to explore new avenues for enhancing regional integration. Discussions included cross-border initiatives that can bolster economic growth and security cooperation across the region, reinforcing the broader vision of regional unity.
In addition to his meetings with government officials, Dr. Workneh visited IGAD’s Mission office in Somalia, where he commended the team for their efforts in implementing IGAD’s regional programs in close collaboration with the Somali government and international partners. Led by the Head of the IGAD Mission to Somalia, Mr. Mohamud Karshe, the office plays a vital role in supporting peacebuilding and development initiatives in the country.
As Somalia continues to make strides in its recovery, IGAD’s visit underscores the organization’s dedication to providing both diplomatic and technical assistance. Dr. Workneh’s visit marks another step forward in strengthening the partnership between IGAD and Somalia, reaffirming the regional bloc’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace, security, and prosperity for all its member states.
