In Memoriam: Professor Andreas Eshete (1940–2024)

The passing of Professor Andreas Eshete on August 29, 2024, marks the end of an era for Ethiopian intellectuals and a significant loss for the global academic community. Renowned philosopher, scholar, and former president of Addis Ababa University, Andreas Eshete was a towering figure whose contributions helped shape the modern landscape of Ethiopian thought and governance.

In this heartfelt tribute, Ezekiel Gebissa commemorates Andreas as the “leading edge of the Ethiopian Left,” highlighting his pivotal role in shaping contemporary Ethiopia. Professor Eshete was instrumental in the drafting of the 1995 Ethiopian constitution, which established the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. This constitution remains a cornerstone of the nation’s political structure, reflecting Eshete’s deep commitment to principles of federalism and democracy.

As a scholar and public intellectual, Professor Eshete was a living symbol of his generation’s courage, integrity, and idealism. He was a man who harmonized his pursuit of knowledge with an unwavering dedication to truth and justice, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
