Harare, Zimbabwe – In a recent development, nine Ethiopian nationals have been convicted for breaching Zimbabwe’s Immigration Act. The incident, which took place at the Chirundu Border Post on April 25, 2024, has raised concerns about illegal immigration in the region.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the individuals—Gezaheng Shuga (20), Caleb Gata Chess (18), Fasel Jamal (17), Kebarke Lumboro (15), Dereje Daniel (18), Dazala Nole (24), Mangesto Marzkos (25), Awol Mudoro (18), and Mohadin Girma—were found hiding in a house in Chirundu Heights. Acting on a tip-off, immigration and police officers conducted a thorough search of the residence, discovering the nine individuals locked inside.
It was determined that the Ethiopian nationals had entered Zimbabwe without valid permits, thus violating the country’s Immigration Act. Following their discovery, they were promptly arraigned before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court.
The court proceedings led to the accused being warned, cautioned, and subsequently discharged. However, they are now awaiting deportation from Zimbabwe. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of managing illegal immigration and the measures taken by authorities to address such violations.
This case underscores the importance of adhering to immigration laws and the vigilance of authorities in maintaining border security. The swift action taken by the immigration and police officers demonstrates Zimbabwe’s commitment to enforcing its laws and protecting its borders.
For many, the story of these nine individuals is a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by those who attempt to migrate illegally. It also calls attention to the broader issue of global migration and the need for coordinated efforts to address the root causes that drive people to undertake such perilous journeys.
