Mekelle, Ethiopia – November 30, 2024
The Tigray Interim Administration has issued a sharp rebuke against Ethiopian Airlines over what it describes as an “unjustified and outrageous” price hike for tickets to Axum during the annual Hadar Zion festival. This festival, a deeply significant religious and cultural event, draws thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
In an official letter addressed to Ethiopian Airlines and the federal Ministry of Transport, the Bureau of Transport and Communication of the Tigray Interim Administration highlighted the financial burden imposed on travelers by the sharp ticket price increases. The bureau argued that the hikes not only hurt passengers but also raise questions about the airline’s commitment to equitable service.
Concerns Over Political Implications
The bureau’s statement expressed concern that the price increases may have a political dimension. It emphasized that such measures could discourage travel to Axum and participation in a culturally and religiously significant event for the Tigray people, potentially undermining the region’s heritage and sense of unity.
“The excessive price hike by Ethiopian Airlines not only calls into question its credibility but also has a political dimension,” the statement read.
The administration has called for compensation for affected passengers and a formal public explanation from Ethiopian Airlines regarding the decision to impose such price increases.
Calls for National Responsibility
The Tigray Interim Administration stressed that Ethiopian Airlines, as a national carrier, has a responsibility to serve all citizens fairly and equitably. By imposing significant price hikes during a high-demand period, the airline risks alienating vulnerable groups and contradicting its stated commitment to corporate social responsibility.
The statement further requested that both the airline and the Ministry of Transport take immediate steps to address the issue, prevent future occurrences, and ensure affordable and accessible transportation for all.
Broader Impact
The issue of ticket price hikes was reportedly discussed in the Tigray Interim Administration’s cabinet, reflecting the seriousness of the matter. Critics argue that the increased prices may deter pilgrims and tourists from visiting Axum, affecting the local economy and diminishing the event’s significance.
The Bureau of Transport and Communication also appealed for measures to ensure affordability for future cultural and religious events, reaffirming the importance of equitable service provision across Ethiopia, particularly in regions of historical and cultural importance.
Awaiting a Response
The administration has made it clear that it expects immediate action and transparency from Ethiopian Airlines and the Ministry of Transport. As public pressure mounts, all eyes are on the airline and federal authorities to provide an explanation and resolution to the issue.
This controversy underscores the broader challenge of balancing corporate interests with national and cultural responsibilities in a country recovering from conflict and striving for reconciliation.
