Washington, D.C. — November 4, 2024
In a recent diplomatic call, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed engaged in a constructive conversation addressing Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to foster peace and stability. The call, held on November 4, focused on reinforcing the 2022 Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), which brought an end to the devastating two-year war between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Secretary Blinken commended Ethiopia’s efforts to implement the COHA, underscoring the United States’ commitment to supporting Ethiopian peace initiatives. This agreement, seen as a critical step forward for Ethiopian stability, has been instrumental in reducing tensions in the country and fostering efforts toward recovery and reconciliation.
However, Blinken’s remarks also highlighted areas of concern that threaten to destabilize Ethiopia further. Specifically, he pointed to escalating violence in the Amhara region, a situation that has alarmed international observers and prompted calls for increased security measures. The Secretary emphasized the importance of continued political dialogue to address this and other internal conflicts that have erupted in different regions of Ethiopia.
Beyond the immediate borders of Ethiopia, Secretary Blinken and Prime Minister Abiy discussed the broader challenges facing the Horn of Africa, a region marked by mounting tensions and complex political dynamics. Both leaders acknowledged that peace and stability in Ethiopia are closely linked to the security of the surrounding region, underscoring the need for cooperative efforts to manage rising tensions across the Horn of Africa.
As Ethiopia navigates its internal conflicts and engages in diplomatic conversations with international partners, the United States remains an active supporter of efforts toward sustainable peace. With Ethiopia’s stability being integral to the region, U.S.-Ethiopian cooperation could play a key role in fostering peace across the Horn of Africa.
