Beijing, September 24, 2024 – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an elevation of China-Ethiopia relations to new heights during a meeting with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie on Monday. Wang emphasized that the two nations, long-standing partners, should deepen their cooperation across a range of sectors.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the strategic partnership between China and Ethiopia, referring to both countries as “all-weather” allies. The foreign minister praised the longstanding and robust nature of their relationship, positioning it as one of China’s leading partnerships within Africa.
During the meeting, Wang urged both sides to build on the agreements made between their respective leaders and to seize the momentum provided by the outcomes of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). This summit, held in Beijing, underscored the importance of deepening ties between China and African nations. Wang stressed that cooperation in various fields, including infrastructure, trade, and development, should be taken to a new level.
As key players in the “Global South,” Wang noted that China and Ethiopia share a commitment to challenging global hegemonies and promoting justice. He called for stronger collaboration between the two countries on international and regional issues, with the goal of contributing to global peace and sustainable development.
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie echoed Wang’s sentiments, describing the recently concluded FOCAC summit as a “milestone” in China-Africa relations. Taye praised the summit for its fruitful outcomes and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s strong commitment to its partnership with China. He also emphasized Ethiopia’s continued adherence to the “One-China” policy, which opposes the recognition of Taiwan as an independent state.
Taye expressed optimism about the future of China-Ethiopia relations, stating that Ethiopia looks forward to expanding cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, investment, and technology. He also stressed the importance of joint efforts in international affairs, committing to stand alongside China in opposing unilateralism and hegemonism, while safeguarding fairness on the global stage.
The meeting reflects the broader strengthening of relations between China and Africa, as well as the increasing role both nations aim to play in shaping global governance. As two major developing nations, China and Ethiopia’s partnership is seen as pivotal in promoting multilateralism and advocating for the interests of developing countries in international forums.
The FOCAC summit, which brings together leaders from China and African countries, remains a key platform for dialogue and collaboration, aiming to foster long-term economic and political partnerships. As China continues to invest heavily in Africa, the relationship with Ethiopia stands as a model of what enhanced cooperation could bring to the region and beyond.
This development underscores the growing importance of China-Africa relations, with China solidifying its position as a leading partner in the continent’s development, while African nations like Ethiopia increasingly see China as a key ally in both economic and political arenas.
