Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Meets UN’s Undersecretary for Peacebuilding, Discusses Regional Stability

New York, USA – September 24, 2024

Ethiopian Foreign Minister H.E. Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie met today with Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations Undersecretary-General for Peacebuilding and Political Affairs, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The two officials discussed a range of pressing issues, including peace and security concerns in Sudan and Somalia, reaffirming their commitment to mutual cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister Taye emphasized the strong working relationship Ethiopia shares with various UN agencies operating within the country. He underscored the importance of regular consultations to address both local and regional challenges. One of the key topics discussed was the ongoing crisis in Sudan. The Foreign Minister reiterated Ethiopia’s stance on seeking a political solution to the conflict and called for coordinated international efforts to bring peace to its northern neighbor.

“Ethiopia has consistently advocated for a political resolution in Sudan,” Minister Taye remarked, highlighting his country’s dedication to fostering stability in the region. He stressed that collaborative action is essential to ending the violence and ensuring long-term peace for Sudan’s people.

The conversation also turned to Somalia, where Minister Taye outlined Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts in the fight against terrorism. He pointed out that any post-ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia) arrangement should be thoroughly deliberated, considering key factors such as the mission’s mandate, size, financing, and coordination. Taye also raised concerns about the potential for external actors supplying arms to Somalia, warning that such interventions could inadvertently strengthen terrorist groups and further destabilize the fragile security situation in the country.

“Uncontrolled arms supplies risk falling into the wrong hands, exacerbating security challenges and empowering terrorists,” he cautioned, stressing the need for careful consideration before making any decisions about Somalia’s future security arrangements.

Ms. DiCarlo, representing the UN’s peacebuilding efforts, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working with Ethiopia to address peace and security issues both in the Horn of Africa and beyond. She praised Ethiopia’s role in regional peace initiatives and expressed the UN’s willingness to continue supporting peacebuilding efforts in Sudan and Somalia.

The meeting reflected the broader concerns of the international community regarding stability in East Africa, with both Ethiopia and the UN emphasizing the need for diplomacy, multilateral coordination, and long-term strategies to tackle the root causes of conflict.

As the 79th session of the UNGA continues, Ethiopia’s engagement on these key regional issues signals its active role in fostering peace and security across the Horn of Africa. This discussion between Minister Taye and Ms. DiCarlo underscores the vital partnership between Ethiopia and the United Nations in addressing some of the most complex challenges facing the region today
